To Be a Writer, Write!

A writer is someone who writes. This is so simplistic. It sounds like a child answering the question, “What is a writer?” on a test.

Kids are awesome. They understand about getting back to fundamentals. They speak truth as they know it.

My eleven year old hit me with one of those truths this weekend. Saturday, I was working on my author’s platform (mostly Twitter and Facebook, but also Pinterest  too.) I was also reviewing emails from my tax consultant as I contemplate declaring myself a business. (Although I have yet to make any money, I am investing with the goal of earning a living writing some day!) I was texting with my Godson who is working on a logo for me to trademark. My son asked how my novel was going. I told him I was working on the business end of being an author.

He was heading to the kitchen,  but stopped mid-step and looked at me. “Mom, you can’t have a business if you don’t write your books! You have to write to be a writer!”

I wanted to protest his words, which, although they were said with a smile and no ill-intent, stung nonetheless. I wanted to protest to him that I had written a book. Quest for the King has been completed for over a month and submitted to numerous agents, albeit with no takers to date. I wanted to protest and explain that he didn’t understand the business end. In the end, though, I nodded in agreement.

He was right. To be a writer, you have to write.

So, I took his words of truth and applied them. I sat down with my laptop and finished major revisions on chapter four. Now–on to chapter five!
